Preparatory Steps

 WARNING 

Batteries can emit explosive gases. To reduce the possibility or personal injury, always ventilate the compartment before servicing the batteries. To reduce the possibility of arcing, remove the negative (-) battery cable first and attach the negative (-) battery cable last.
  • Disconnect the batteries. Refer to the OEM service manual.

Remove

Loosen the alternator-to-alternator support bracket nut and capscrew.

Loosen the adjusting link capscrew and tensioning bolt, if applicable.

Push the alternator towards the engine to release tension on the alternator belt, and remove the belt(s).

Install

Install new alternator belts on the pulleys.

Adjust

TOC

Use a pry bar between the engine and the alternator to tighten the alternator belt.

Use the following procedure for belt tension specifications. Refer to Procedure 018-005 in Section V.

A belt is considered used if it has been in operation for 10 minutes or longer.

If used belt tension is below the minimum value, tighten to the maximum value.

Replace the belt if it will not maintain the correct tension.



SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE
   

Tighten the adjusting link capscrews to the following torque values (grade 5 or higher):

Torque Value:
Capscrew Size: 5/16-18
  1. 20 n.m    [15 ft-lb]
Torque Value:
Capscrew Size: 7/16-14
  1. 34 n.m    [25 ft-lb]
Torque Value:
Capscrew Size: ½-13
  1. 68 n.m    [50 ft-lb]


SMALL | MEDIUM | LARGE
   

Tighten the alternator-to-alternator support capscrew and nut to the following torque values (grade 5 or higher):

Torque Value:
Capscrew Size: 3/8-16
  1. 41 n.m    [30 ft-lb]
Torque Value:
Capscrew Size: 7/16-20
  1. 88 n.m    [65 ft-lb]
Torque Value:
Capscrew Size: ½-13
  1. 108 n.m    [80 ft-lb]

Finishing Steps

  • Connect the batteries. Refer to the OEM service manual.
  • Operate the engine and check for proper operation.
